When Apple first announced the iPod Photo, I said "why would you want to carry around your pictures?". I owned a 15GB, 3G iPod at the time and to me, the only appeal of the Photo was the color screen; not enough for me to pick up a 4G.
When Apple announced the 5G iPod with Video, I said "I have no video, if I had that, I would never watch video." Well, tonight I headed down to the Apple store on a whim and picked up a black, 30GB iPod. After syncing up all my music, photos, podcasts, contacts and calendars I figured that the only thing left was to see how good video looked on this guy. Taking a tip from a friend, I downloaded the first episode available of Lost off the iTunes Music Store (note: despite owning a 3G iPod for over a year and a half and a 1GB Shuffle for 8 months or so, I have never bought a single thing off of the iTunes music store. I like to rip CDs.). After the show finished downloading, I synced it up with my shiny new iPod and curled up on my futon, iPod-in-hand. I mean, I just paid 2 bucks for this show, I may as well watch it (note: I've never seen any episode of any of the shows offered on the iTunes music store before.).
So, what's the end of this story? They win. Apple wins. They got me. I'm hooked. I watched the whole episode, and I plan on buying the next and watching it as soon as tomorrow. I don't know why, but I just shut off my tv, and watched my iPod. It didn't bother me that the screen is small and I actually liked listening on headphones. Damn. How do they do stuff like that?
Okay, so aside from the great video quality and just the overall great video experience, this sucker is nice looking. It's sleek. It's thin. Its simple. I absolutely love the click wheel (I was used to the 3G wheel + 4 'buttons'). I love the screen: it's big and crisp and the graphics are awesome. Having the color screen definitely creates a better user experience.
So what does this all mean? It means Apple has done it again. 4.5/5 stars for this first look. Why 4.5? Well because my black iPod came with white headphones. Please, can't someone just explain the reasoning behind this?
